Peter Pan Deluxe won second place at the Alcuin Society Excellence in Book Design in Canada.

The Ubiquitous Book Blog conducted an in-depth review of both the Standard and Deluxe states of Peter Pan. Watch the video review below or visit their website to read the detailed write-up and view more photos.

Individually from #1 to #200, the Deluxe State is limited to 200 copies for sale and there is a limit of one per household. A portion of proceeds from the purchase of every copy goes to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, helping the Hospital to deliver life-changing care to patients and discover new treatments and cures.

BINDING
The Deluxe state is hand bound by Ludlow Bookbinders in a sumptuous, deep green goatskin leather. The spine has five raised bands and a maroon label with gold tooling above and below. The front board is foil stamped in copper with an illustration, title lettering and the names of the author and artist. Inspired by the Deluxe state of the first edition of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, illustrated by Arthur Rackham, Charles’ new iconic take on the younger Peter sees him riding a swan while accompanied by fairies under the moonlight.

ILLUSTRATIONS
The full-colour frontispiece is printed giclée using pigmented inks on archival Somerset 100% cotton moulde-made paper, while the eight other plates are printed on Nova Matt 150gsm paper, upgraded from the 130gsm used in the Standard state. All plates are tipped in with glassine guards over each. Two double page spread maps, of Kensington Gardens and Neverland, are folded and bound in.

PAPER
The text block is made of thick, luxurious Magnani Pescia Edition 160gsm (110#) paper. The endpapers are Italian-made Art Nouveau decorative papers from Rossi, also used for the boards of the Standard State. In addition to butterflies, flowers, and flecks of gold, birds are prominently featured on this paper, alluding to Peter’s status of being caught “betwixt-and-between” a boy and a bird in Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

ENCLOSURE
Each book is enclosed in a custom, handmade, suedel-lined slipcase with rounded top and bottom and chamfered edges around the sides. Each side of the slipcase is foil stamped with the one of the two half-title illustrations created by Charles Vess for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and Peter & Wendy.

SIGNATURE
Each book is signed by Charles Vess.

Magical

With their first publication, Conversation Tree Press immediately knocks it out of the park. Clearly a lot of thought has gone in the design of this book. It is an ambitious first project, with many tipped-in images (facing the correct page to which they refer!) two fold-out maps, gorgeous endpapers and letterpress throughout including many line drawings.
A special mention for the generous margins on both the sides and the bottom. It is a subtle thing, but it makes a big impact on the reading experience in my opinion. The book is expertly crafted, feels sturdy, durable and not delicate. A nice touch is the snug fit of the slipcase with a soft lining, this give a very luxurious feel when sliding the book out.
What a debut.

Wonderful Peter Pan

Everything here just fits perfectly! The design is truly superb, and coupled with the outstanding, robust paper that showcases the printing exceptionally well, it's a real gem. The book is intricately crafted and beautifully illustrated. The endpapers are among my all-time favorites. A truly fantastic book.
