Foundation by Isaac Asimov - Collector’s Edition

Our signed, limited edition of Foundation by Isaac Asimov is published in three states: Collector’s, Deluxe and, Lettered Editions. See the announcement here.

Set in a far future where humanity is spread across the galaxy under the rule of the Galactic Empire, The Foundation Trilogy introduces the theory of “psychohistory”—a method of predicting the future of large populations using a combination of statistics, history, and sociology.

In Foundation, the first in the trilogy , Hari Seldon uses psychohistory to predict the imminent collapse of the Galactic Empire and the onset of a 30,000-year dark age. In an effort to shorten this period to a mere 1,000 years, he oversees the establishment of the Foundation at the edge of the galaxy on the planet Terminus.

Over the course of five interrelated stories, we follow the Foundation’s rise to power through a series of strategic manipulations and crises, all the while facing a number of political, economic, and military challenges from neighbouring regions.

Acclaimed for its imaginative scope and exploration of themes like determinism, free will, and the cyclical nature of history, the trilogy has been highly influential in both literature and popular culture, winning the one-time Hugo Award for “Best All-Time Series” in 1966 and recently coming to life in spectacular fashion as an Apple TV series.

Nice but left me wanting more

There's no doubt that this is a nice and beautiful copy of this book, but for $303 (after tax and shipping), I was unfortunately left wanting more.

It's the most expensive book I've ever purchased yet it is not the nicest in my collection. I loved the sparkly slip case, but unfortunately the cover's painterly canvas style didn't resonate with me and almost felt grainy or low resolution.

The Foundation title text inside is beautifully displayed, but that's really it as far as unique aspects of the book. The art is certainly beautiful but I disagree with the decision to make them fold outs. Opening them up takes me out of the narrative and I would have preferred them to just take up 2 pages.

I think it's coincidental or even ironic that Brandon Sanderson wrote the forward for this edition, as I find he sets the highest bar for special bound editions.

I own all of Sanderson's special editions and they are the best there is. His Secret Project books are absolutely the most beautiful books I've ever seen and those were less than $100 each.

Similarly, his leather bounds set the standard for top quality special editions, and those come in at under $200.

I understand that Asimov's work is perennial, but for me, the quality of this book is not reflected by the price and I can't justify continuing to buy the rest of the series, especially given that the second one is now more expensive than the first.

This Collector's edition of Foundation is a winner! Love what CTP did (so far) with this Asimov classic trilogy and am looking forwards to the second book. And third!
