The Road - Cormac McCarthy

“He walked out in the gray light and stood and he saw for a brief moment the absolute truth of the world. The cold relentless circling of the intestate earth. Darkness implacable. The blind dogs of the sun in their running. The crushing black vacuum of the universe. And somewhere two hunted animals trembling like ground-foxes in their cover. Borrowed time and borrowed world and borrowed eyes with which to sorrow it.”

—Cormac McCarthy, The Road

A searing vision of love and desolation, The Road stands among the defining works of twenty-first-century American literature. In prose stripped to its essence, Cormac McCarthy renders a world reduced to ash and silence—a landscape where civilisation has long since fallen, and a father and his son make their way through its ruins.

Together they journey through the wasteland, moving south toward an unseen coast, driven by a faint and unspoken hope. Their world is one of scarcity and fear, yet within its ruins McCarthy finds a stark and terrible beauty: the persistence of tenderness, the instinct to protect, the stubborn will to carry the fire when all light seems extinguished.

Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and named one of The New York Times’s 100 Best Books of the 21st Century, The Road is both elegy and testament—a meditation on love as the last refuge of meaning in a ruined world. Bleak yet transcendent, it remains one of the most haunting and humane novels of our time.

For any parent, The Road carries a particular resonance—a reflection of love’s quiet ferocity in the face of despair. Conversation Tree Press is honoured to present this modern classic in a fine press edition worthy of its power.
