Updates on Weird., Our Ongoing Collection of Weird Fiction

Updates on Weird., Our Ongoing Collection of Weird Fiction

Weird., our ongoing collection of the finest weird fiction, is curated, edited, and introduced by S. T. Joshi. Widely regarded as the leading authority on the genre, he brings decades of scholarship to the selection and presentation of each volume. Many of the stories in the series are updated, authoritative versions of the text, reflecting his meticulous editorial work. Each volume is letterpress-printed, handsomely bound, and illustrated with newly commissioned artwork.

This post shares two updates: the revised design for the second volume in the series and news on forthcoming volumes, including some new artwork.

Updated Marbling for Cold Print & Others Deluxe and Lettered Editions

Our original design for the boards of the Deluxe Edition and the endpapers of the Lettered Edition of Ramsey Campbell’s Cold Print & Others featured a marbled paper by Freya Scott. Scheduling constraints, however, prevented her from completing the work in time.

With the printed sheets already at Ludlow and binding scheduled to begin as soon as Foundation is finished, we chose not to delay production. Instead, we commissioned new marbled papers from Daniela Prina, the artist behind the papers for Gibbet Hill and There Will Come Soft Rains

Daniela has created an overmarbled design—a technique in which a sheet is first marbled, left to dry, and then returned to the tank to be marbled again. The result is a richly layered effect that could not be achieved in a single pass, though it demands nearly twice the labour and time.

The depth and intricacy of the pattern make it an ideal complement to the atmosphere of Ramsey Campbell’s work.

Upcoming Volumes

With William Hope Hodgson’s volume already published and Ramsey Campbell’s arriving soon, here is a look at some of the forthcoming volumes we have been working on.

  • Arthur Machen Volume 1 illustrated by Vladimir Zimakov (2026)
  • Arthur Machen Volume 2 illustrated by Vladimir Zimakov (2027)
  • Ambrose Bierce
  • Lord Dunsany
  • Algernon Blackwood Volume 1
  • Algernon Blackwood Volume 2
  • Edgar Allan Poe Volume 1
  • Edgar Allan Poe Volume 2
  • Clark Ashton Smith
  • H.P. Lovecraft: The Cthulhu Mythos Volume 1
  • H.P. Lovecraft: The Cthulhu Mythos Volume 2
  • H.P. Lovecraft: The Cthulhu Mythos Volume 3
  • M.R. James

The two Arthur Machen volumes will be published in 2026 and 2027 respectively, but the order of the remaining volumes in the series has not yet been decided. Vladimir Zimakov has already completed the artwork for both volumes and the remarques for the Lettered Editions. Here’s a look at of one of his haunting linocuts, which will be letterpress-printed in two colours:

Sveta Dorosheva has already completed emblem artwork, chapter heads, and tailpieces for several volumes and continues to work on the others. Here is her sketch for one of the Machen volumes:

She recently sent in the final version for the first Lovecraft volume—an image at once repulsive and entrancing, steeped in the uncanny weirdness that makes her work such a natural fit for the series.

Svetlana Molodchenko has also completed the title page calligraphy and decorations for some of the volumes.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead

We began developing Weird. in the summer of 2022, and it has been a continuous labour of care ever since. The response so far has been tremendously encouraging, and we’re grateful to everyone who’s supported the Press along the way.

As the series grows, our aim remains clear: to bring together original collections of the best stories of weird fiction in volumes that honour both the texts and the traditions of fine bookmaking. Every title is produced with the same commitment to strong typography, careful design, and close collaboration with artists, printers, and binders.

With many more volumes ahead, we look forward to sharing the next stages of Weird. with you, and to continuing this exploration of the strange, the unsettling, and the beautifully uncanny.
